Summary: Teal'c's adventures through the Stargate, trying to find Jack and Sam. Written for the Off-Screen Missions Alphabet Soup.
The first planet they try is covered by desert. The Gate is housed in a small pyramid structure—smaller than any Teal’c has encountered before—surrounded by sand dunes as far as the eye can see. It reminds him of Abydos, and the deep pain of those memories momentarily wells up through the cold weight of worry he carries for Colonel O’Neill and Captain Carter. There is no sign of either of them, no hint that they or anyone else has been on the planet in many years. SG-3 completes a circuit of the pyramid and the dune it is on, just in case, before they file back through the Gate.
On the next planet, they walk out of the Gate and immediately onto a steeply declining path that leads into and through a shallow, rocky cave. The cave is flanked on one side by a meadow and on the other by the Gate, which leans precipitously against the top of the cave mouth. On the meadow side of the cave, the path is level with the outside ground; on the Gate side, its angle matches the tilt of the gate. The pocket formed at the paths' convergence is empty. If Colonel O'Neill and Captain Carter had come through this Gate, Teal'c is sure they would be there. He is also sure they would be dead, if they were subject to the same velocity and trajectory that he and Daniel Jackson had endured. A quick search of the area immediately around the Gate and the cave turns up no trace of recent travelers, and Teal'c leads SG-3 back the way they came.
They believe the third world to be uninhabited. The MALP shows a snowy scene—early evening or morning, dark forest nearby—with no visible indications of habitation. The steady fall of snow means any evidence of the colonel and the captain would have quickly been buried, so the search moves to the nearest cover: the trees. Not far from the Gate, they stumble across an encampment of natives, nestled in a small clearing. The people peer into their faces with open curiosity, shaking their heads with small smiles as Corporal Johnson tries to communicate with them in the limited languages he knows. Teal'c stops him after only a few minutes. Another team can be sent to complete first contact; for now, it is clear these people have not seen Colonel O'Neill or Captain Carter. The Tau'ri are different enough from the native inhabitants that they would almost certainly connect the search and rescue team with any others that had come through the Gate before. Disappointed but not discouraged, the team trudges back to the Gate through knee-deep snow.
When they arrive on the fourth planet, Teal'c's first thought is of Daniel Jackson. The Gate is situated in a large, open-air plaza, surrounded on all sides by what appears to be miles and miles of ruins, some formerly grand city long-since abandoned. The design of the structures seems familiar to Teal'c in a way that he cannot place, and he reflexively makes mental notes of the patterns and materials and construction methods he recognizes as he and SG-3 clear room after room. They only cover a couple of blocks in each direction, but no one expects the colonel or the captain to have gone farther than that. The city may or may not be entirely empty, but it doesn't hold their missing teammates.
They gate to a moon next. Dense jungle grows right up to the Gate, creeping vines even managing to inch their way up its sides. There is a path cut through the foliage in front of the Gate, just the size and shape of a pa mel hai, evidence of their arrival. The thickness of the undergrowth means that Colonel O'Neill and Captain Carter couldn't have walked further into the jungle without leaving some trace of their passing, a trace that is nowhere to be found. Even so, they search thirty meters from the gate in all directions. They find nothing.
Arrival on the sixth planet can be dangerous. The Gate there faces a narrow gorge and the remnants of the bridge that once spanned it. Across the gorge can be seen a stone abutment, still holding a few meters of crumbling bridge over empty space, but the Gate side is bare. With no more than five meters between the Gate and the drop-off, the slightest misstep in arrival could send a traveler over the edge. Teal'c is last through the Gate, and is surprised to find SG-3 lingering nearby. Upon his arrival, they fan out to search the trees behind the Gate. He resolutely walks forward and looks down into the gorge. The dry riverbed below is devoid of his teammates, injured or otherwise. The surrounding countryside is equally empty of signs of their presence, and the team gate back after an hour of fruitless searching.
The Gate on the seventh planet is set at the edge of a grassy plain. Not thirty meters away is a line of low, rocky hills pocketed with caves. It is the only form of shelter in sight, so Teal'c takes point, leading SG-3 up into the hills. Most of the caves are shallow, easily searched with no more than a glance inside. Several are deeper, with shadowy depths and smaller antechambers that require more thorough investigation. The group splits up to cover more ground, as it appears they have arrived late in the planet's afternoon, with night fast approaching.
Teal'c pairs with Major Castleman, and the two climb to a higher row of caves. They are near the end of the row when the major steps out onto the ledge in an effort to see if there is a way up to the next level. Almost immediately, the ledge gives way beneath his feet and he tumbles from sight with a shout. The rest of SG-3 have rushed to the major's side by the time Teal'c works his way down to them. The major is unconscious, blood seeping from more than one head wound and a large gash on his arm. Teal'c hands his staff weapon to Corporal Johnson, settles Major Castleman across his shoulders, and leads the way back down. Night has fallen around them by the time they step into the Gate, one man down and their number the same.
