Summary: Written for the [community profile] sg1friendathon: "Cam, Daniel. Initiation."

They are eating dinner at some odd, post-mission hour, sitting hollow-eyed and weary at a corner table, when SG-21 strolls into the commissary. Cam and Daniel share a glance over the boisterousness of the other team.

Hartfield and Garrison are good-naturedly ragging on the team's newest recruit, Mrezi. Even Titus, the commander, gets in on the action, affecting a solemn scowl when Mrezi looks his way. Loaded down with trays for himself and his teammates, Mrezi follows in their wake to a table across the room. They watch him struggle for a few seconds in his attempts to get the trays onto the table and then, laughing, help him. Titus claps him on the shoulder before sinking onto one of the chairs, and Mrezi gives him a grin.

Cam smiles a little wistfully, remembering his own rite of passage like something from another lifetime. He looks over at Daniel, who is disinterestedly pushing mashed potatoes around his plate.

“You know, I half expected you guys to put me through some kind of initiation,” Cam says.

“Initiation?” Daniel asks.

“Breaking in the new guy,” Cam clarifies, nodding toward SG-21.

Daniel doesn't look up from his mashed potatoes. “Who says we didn't?”

Cam narrows his eyes, scanning through his memories for anything resembling the hazing rituals he knows. Finding nothing, he leans back in his chair and folds his arms over his chest. He is eyeing Daniel skeptically when Daniel raises his head.

“You didn't,” Cam says firmly.

Abandoning the mashed potato mountain he was constructing, Daniel sets his fork aside and rests his chin in his hand.

“Let's see,” he says. “You've dealt with leftovers from the Ancients, holograms, and alien team members.” Daniel counts them off on his free hand. “You've had a wild goose chase, a near death experience—”

“Or two, or three,” Cam cuts in.

“Par for the course,” Daniel flippantly replies. “You've blown something up and had something blow up in your face.” He pauses, thinking. “You've met Ba'al.”

“That's an initiation?”

“SG-1 specific,” Daniel says. “You've been kidnapped. You've made a stupid, rookie mistake.”

Cam frowns and looks away, but Daniel continues as if he doesn't notice.

“Or two or three—also par for the course. You've had your mind messed with and you've met versions of yourself from other timelines.” Daniel looks up and meets Cam's eyes. “And you've survived so far mostly on luck.” He shrugs and resumes his culinary construction. “I'd say you passed.”

Cam nods in understanding and picks up his glass of water.

“Plus, Teal'c glued your boots together.”

He barely manages not to spray Daniel with water. “That was Teal'c?!” he coughs.

Daniel gives him a tiny smile and a nod, confusion in his eyes. Cam shakes his head and grins crookedly.

“I thought Siler did it accidentally.” There is a dangerous glint in his eye when he pushes back his chair and stands. “Seems like I owe Siler an apology, and Teal'c a turnabout.”

“I wouldn't, if I were you,” Daniel advises sagely.

“The apology or getting even?”

“Getting even—though if you can't be stopped from doing the latter, I definitely wouldn't do the former.” Daniel gives him a warning look. “It'll let Teal'c know you're coming.”

Cam slaps him on the shoulder. “Good thinking, Jackson.” Mulling over the situation, he heads off to return his tray.

“If you do it anyway,” Daniel calls over his shoulder, “I had nothing to do with you finding out.”

Cam gives him a wave and strides out of the room. As the door swings shut behind him, Daniel smiles to himself.
