Summary: Written for the
sg1friendathon: "Jack, Sam. The joy of making things go *boom*"
Note: Title from the John Lee Hooker song, for the simple fact that I could *not* get that refrain out of my head the entire time I was writing this. Mileage may vary.
Sam had just finished setting the last of their C4 in place under one of the gliders when staff blasts started flying over their heads.
“Alright, gentlemen and lady, let's hit the road!” Jack called, returning fire as he backed toward their exit route.
Sam hopped down from the landing gear she was perched on and darted down the row of gliders. As she cut the corner to head back toward the colonel, she fell into step between Teal'c and Daniel, who were making their own escapes from other areas of the field.
“Did you get yours in place?” she asked as they caught up with Jack.
“Yeah,” Daniel puffed. “All done.”
“I was successful as well,” Teal'c replied, looking far less winded than the others.
“We good?” Jack asked, looking to Sam for confirmation. She nodded. “Okay gang; head out.”
They beat a quick retreat from the glider field, stumbling up the scrubby incline that led to the only way in or out of the walled area. Behind them, numerous Jaffa could be seen scurrying around the parked aircraft, pausing periodically to fire poorly aimed shots in the team's direction. A few of the pursuers were quite close, though, and the team didn't pause as they reached level ground again, making for the archway that led through the wall as quickly as possible. Jack, bringing up the rear and returning fire as he was able, ducked through last. A few yards out, he stopped and turned back, pulling a grenade from his belt. The others, noticing his absence behind them, stopped as well to see what he was doing.
“Jack!” Daniel called.
“Sir!”
“Just a second,” he replied.
Pulling the pin, he lobbed the grenade toward the opening in the wall and ran. The rest of the team, realizing his plan, had already resumed their retreat as well.
The grenade landed just inside the archway and exploded almost instantly. At the sound of the blast, the group halted once more to take in the damage. Once the smoke and dust cleared, they could see that the explosion had caused the doorway to collapse on itself, effectively sealing the Jaffa in behind it.
“Nice aim, sir,” Sam said.
“Thanks. It won't hold them for long, though, so why don't we mosey on,” Jack replied, shooing the team before him.
They worked their way through the forest to the Gate, following the broad path that had so conveniently directed them to the glider field in the first place. As they approached the small hill that separated them from the Gate valley, Jack caught up to Sam.
“Think this will work?” he asked.
She nodded. “It should. We placed the C4 strategically on gliders around the area since there were a lot more than we expected and we didn't have enough ordnance to mark them all. Thankfully the ships are parked close together, so the explosions should transfer from the marked ships to the rest of the fleet,” she said, panting slightly as they jogged up the hill. “From what we know of glider construction, I directed Teal'c and Daniel to secure the C4 to the fuel cell of each targeted glider. The fuel cells should be damaged from the initial explosion of the C4, then the cell cores should—”
“Carter,” Jack cut in. “Bottom line: on a scale of one to supernova, how big is this going to get?”
Impressively, she was able to shrug while running. “A four? Maybe a five with secondary. There were a lot of ships.”
“And it should hit all the targets?”
“Should do it, sir.”
“Fantastic.”
Ahead of them on the hillcrest, Daniel and Teal'c reached a small outcropping on the Gate side of the hill. At Jack's direction, they ducked down behind it, Jack and Sam following shortly thereafter to do the same. As soon as they were behind cover, Sam pulled out a detonator and armed it. She looked to Jack, who gave a quick nod, and then pressed the trigger.
There were the dull pops of a series of far-off explosions, distorted with echo by distance. Then a larger, deafening boom thundered in the valley and seemed to grow as other secondary explosions joined in, the sound reverberating on the surrounding hills until the din made their ears ache. The concussive force was almost painful. Peering over the top of the outcropping, they could see the ball of fire and plume of smoke rising from where there had once been a walled valley full of death gliders. Jack stared at it, flabbergasted.
“That was—”
“Yeah,” Sam replied.
“Definitely a five, Carter. Maybe a six.”
“Yes, sir.”
She was clearly a bit stunned by the force of the explosion, but a smile was working its way across her face. By the time she turned to Jack, she was grinning widely. He was as well, and they both scrambled up to survey the damage through their field binoculars. The trees between their position and the field hid much of the place, but they could see that the explosions had carried all the way to the far end of the field, with fires raging over the entire area. Jack looked over at Sam, a faux-serious expression on his face.
“Carter, have I ever told you you're my favorite?” he asked in a dramatic stage whisper.
She was still looking through her binoculars, but he could see her smile.
“Well, sir, now that you mention it...” Her grin faded and she leaned forward slightly on the balls of her feet, adjusting her glasses. “Uh, oh,” she said. “Here comes company.”
Jack pulled his binoculars back up to his face and focused on the area below them. A large patrol of Jaffa were quickly advancing on their position, tromping their way up through the trees.
“Looks like the party's over, kids,” Jack said, motioning the team on down the hill toward the Gate. “Let's go.”
Once they were back on level ground, he turned to Sam again. “Carter, you still have that parting gift for our friends?”
“Yes, sir,” she replied, coming to a stop and digging a second detonator out of a vest pocket.
She faced back toward the hill they had just vacated and armed the device. Before she could push the button, Jack's hand on her wrist stopped her.
“May I?”
She handed over the device with a smile. “Oh, by all means.”
Behind them, Daniel rolled his eyes. Teal'c appeared unfazed, though there was a hint of amusement in his expression. When they could just make out the tops of Jaffa heads coming over the hill, Jack depressed the trigger and the hillside exploded in a shower of dirt, rocks, and C4.
“That should buy us enough time,” he said, pocketing the detonator and herding them toward the Gate. “I do so love the sound of C4 in the afternoon.”
Sam snickered beside him and he turned to her as the Gate opened. They shared a look and stepped through, emerging in the SGC with grins still firmly in place. General Hammond approached them as they trotted down the Gate ramp.
“I take it from your expressions that the mission was a success?”
“Carter blew them up good, sir,” Jack replied.
Sam's smile faltered as she did a double-take to give Jack a look. “All targets were destroyed, sir,” she told Hammond.
“Good,” he replied with a nod and a reproving glance at Jack. “We'll debrief at 0900.”
He strode from the room, Daniel and Teal'c falling into step behind. Sam and Jack followed at a more sedate pace.
“Well, that was fun,” Jack said. “Blowing things up. We should do that more often.”
“We already blow things up a lot, sir.”
“Bigger things, then, Carter,” he replied, throwing his arms wide. “We should blow up bigger things.”
Sam sniggered. “Yes, sir.”
