I feel like this is probably similar to Teal'c's revelation after watching the Tau'ri take down so many Goa'uld... with so little decorum. OMG. That is exactly it.
Hammond basically asserted that he was top dog right at the beginning. Then, when things quickly starting going, well, vortex-shaped, he mostly threw up his hands and let SG-1 do what they had to and stepped in only when necessary. But when he did step in, it was awesome. XD
